Discover how the Black Panther Party transformed Des Moines and its mission to restore power to the people.

As part of Black History Month celebrations, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Community Engaged Learning and the Center for Humanities invite you to learn about the Black Panther Party's impact in Des Moines through their community service activities, organized through their Survival Programs.

Come hear from State Representative, Ako Abdul-Samad, who was involved in the Black Panther Party movement; Rudy Trejo, Executive Director of CFUM (Children and Family Urban Movement) which is still building off on the Black Panther Party legacy today; and a current Drake student, who will emphasize the importance of showing up meaningfully. A timeline of the history will also be displayed at the event, chronicling the history of the Black Panther Party as it relates to today's neighborhood.
