UN Day Event in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
This event will be held in Cowles Library Reading Room at Drake University. The event will open the exhibit of the collection of UNICEF plates celebrating the world’s children that was generously donated to the Iowa United Nations Association by Ed and Mary Flaherty of Iowa City, who will be recognized at this event.
Public lecture: Children’s Rights as Human Rights: The Convention on the Rights of the Child at 30
Description: Professor Debra DeLaet will speak about children’s rights in the 21st century. As the international community prepares to recognize the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, she will highlight progress in the realization of the children’s rights across the globe as well as discuss the limitations of international human rights law as a framework for promoting children’s rights. She will discuss major challenges to children’s rights, including poverty-related deprivations, threats in conflict zones, the detention of migrant children, and the existential threat of climate change.
