Cowles Library's Atrium will display the collection of UNICEF plates celebrating the world’s children, generously donated to the Iowa United Nations Association by Ed and Mary Flaherty of Iowa City.
Beginning in 1977, UNICEF issued one plate per year for its Children of the World Plate collection. The plates in this collection are porcelain, and each decorated plate is 7 ½” in diameter. Karen Blume, the artist, was an illustrator/painter and an author of children’s books.
The UNICEF plate collection was produced by Villeroy and Boch, headquartered in Mettlach, Germany, a world-renowned manufacturer of fine china, glass ware, silver ware, and home décor. Floor tiles produced by the company were part of the interior fittings of the Titanic. Villeroy and Boch has also produced tiles that decorate the Cologne Cathedral, the New York’s Holland Tunnel, and the dinnerware service at the Vatican.
