Reflecting on a 40-year career in High Energy Physics, I see that interesting things were happening all around me, emphasizing the value of occasionally looking sideways. I have chosen three that interest me: (1) recovering an Archimedes manuscript lost since the middle ages, (2) non-destructively recovering early foil and wax audio recordings from the labs of A. G. Bell, Thomas Edison, and others and (3) bringing collaborators from around the world together via the World Wide Web. All are unplanned benefits from pursuing curiosity-driven research.
